A Rolex tropical dial is the beautiful result of an unintentional twist of fate. Originally designed with a special UV-resistant paint finish in the mid-20th century, these dials were meant to withstand the sun’s harsh rays. But under just the right mix of sunlight, heat, humidity, and subtle imperfections in the curing process, they transformed, developing a rich, often chocolatey patina. What began as a manufacturing flaw has since become one of the most sought-after and charming aging effects in vintage watch collecting.
This piece is one of the few to have developed a beautifully rich dark chocolate patina. Combined with its highly coveted and rarer no-lume dial, it truly stands out as a distinctive and exceptional example.
Gilt Dial:
To some collectors, a "true" gilt dial is characterized by a meticulous process that reveals the underlying metal of the dial in negative relief. This technique often results in golden text and markers, as it exposes the blank brass beneath the dial's surface. However, it can also reveal other materials, such as yellow or white gold, silver, or another layer applied to the base. Therefore, a "true" gilt refers not to the gold color, but to the specific manufacturing process used.

CONDITION
This watch is in very nice and honest condition, the case is thick and strong.
The dial is striking, showcasing a rich, uniform dark brown tone that shifts beautifully with the light. Adding to its charm, the roulette date wheel has also taken on warm tropical hues, an eye-catching detail that enhances the overall character of the watch.
It has two partially missing lume plots, at 5 and 7, but both still glow under UV light.
The watch has just been fully seriviced and keeps great time.
The amplitude is 275°, the Rate -6s/d.
