Rolex - 1966 Rolex 5513 Submariner Stardust Gilt Gloss Custard Patina Box Papers
For sale is a very good condition 40mm stainless steel Rolex Submariner Gilt / Gloss “Stardust” Dial. The 1,297,xxx serial 5513 bears an inner caseback production stamp from the third quarter of 1965, and was originally retailed in October of 1966. The Submariner is accompanied by its original inner box, dated and embossed warranty paper, and an instructional manual for the "Auto Lock" diver bezel.
The 5513 features a brushed steel case, which is accented by a bidirectional divers bezel that is set with its original MK 2 “Long 5” fat font bezel insert. The Submariner is mounted on a period correct brushed steel 7206 Oyster bracelet that is stamped with a first quarter of 1967 production date on the clasp. The 7206 bracelet contains 10 full size links, and will comfortably fit a 7.10 inch wrist. The 5513 retains its original black “Star Dust” gilt / glossy dial with tritium hour markers and polished white gold tritium coated hands. The tritium hour markers and hands aged beautifully and acquired an even and vivid custard colored patina. Under UV light inspection the dial’s untouched lume plots glow correctly, while the hands do not glow. This indicates the hands were possibly fitted during a service, which would be consistent with the RSC service marks inside the caseback dating to the 1970s and early 1980s.
Condition:
The case contains even lugs, with some factory chamfers remaining. The MK2 bezel insert has aged beautifully to a dark navy blue hue, while the tritium bezel pip has acquired a patina that is consistent with the dial and hands. The 7206 Oyster bracelet contains minimal stretch. The gilt dial’s gloss remains strong and mirror-like, but contains some tropical “Star Dust'' specs on the lacquer. In addition, there is some extremely faint spidering in the lacquer by the 12 o’clock hour marker. The Gilt dial has stood the test of time decently, and is a truly honest gilt dial, which has signs of age, but presents beautifully in the sunlight and in person, with a strong original gloss. The acrylic crystal contains some minor surface level wear.
Overall the 5513 is in very good vintage condition and is an honest example of a late gilt / gloss dial 5513, which remains as found, having been purchased from the original owner’s wife, with the box and papers being an added bonus !
