For sale is an excellent condition 32mm by 38mm 18 karat yellow gold Audemars Piguet Tonneau Dress Watch Automatic. The ​​5279BA was originally retailed in 1970, and is not accompanied by box or papers. 

The Audemars Piguet features a brushed yellow gold “cushion” shaped tonneau case containing a cabochon sapphire crown. The Tonneau is mounted on a brown calfskin leather strap, which is secured by the watch’s original yellow gold AP signed Wenger tang buckle. The AP features a silver satin dial with black painted Breguet numeral hour markers and hand fired blued Breguet style hands. The movement used in the 5279BA is the Audemars Piguet caliber 2120, which is based on the ultra-thin Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 920, and is running flawlessly.

Overall the AP remains in excellent vintage condition, and is a wonderful well preserved example of a seldom seen yellow gold vintage AP Tonneau Extra Thin Dress Watch on strap. 

About the reference 5279BA:
The Ref. 5279BA Tonneau is truly an interesting historical offering from Audemars Piguet in the sense that it embodies “Cartier” like aesthetics with its oversized tonneau case and cabochon crown, yet is distinctly Audemars Piguet in its own right. While the 5279 doesn’t appear often on straps, there is no denying that it had a hand in inspiring later Audemars Piguet models such as the 1990s “John Schaeffer” Ref. 150101BA.00. However in 2012 Audemars Piguet unveiled the Tradition Ultra Thin Limited Edition QE Cup II “Queen Elizabeth Cup II” Ref. 15334OR.OO.A092CR.01, which could almost be interpreted as a re-edition of the ​​5279BA Tonneau.
