Audemars Piguet - 1970s Audemars Piguet Tonneau Ultra Slim (Ref. 5420)
Worth A Read
History & Significance
The reference 5420 is more important than you think. We will start in the 70s when this watch was introduced. In 1972 Audemars Pget would debut oe of the most important watches in history. With the help of Gerlad Genta, they would create the Royal Oak reference 5402. An ulktra slim sports dress watch housing the caliber 2121. At the same time, partnered with Gerald Genta, they would introudce a dress watch with the same caliber. This Tonneau shaped case was designed by Gerald Genta at the same time as the Royal Oak. We believe the 5420 was the first reference to introduce this model because of the similar reference numbers and the same caliber.
Writer’s Thoughts
This Tonneau Ref. 5420 is one of those quiet pieces that tells a bigger story. To think it shares the same movement and design lineage as the Royal Oak, yet exists in such a refined, understated form, makes it deeply compelling. The warmth of the 18k yellow gold, paired with the champagne brushed dial, gives it a presence that is distinctly 1970s.
