History & Significance
Louis Cartier created the first Tank watch in 1917, drawing inspiration from the Renault FT-17 tanks used during World War I. The design’s strong lines and geometric symmetry mirrored the treads and silhouette of the modern military vehicle. Presented to U.S. General John Pershing in 1918, the Tank officially debuted in 1919 and quickly became a symbol of sophistication and modernism.
Over the years, Cartier introduced several variations — the Tank Louis Cartier with its softened lugs, the elongated Tank Américaine, and the sportier Tank Française. Yet, throughout its evolution, the core DNA of the Tank has remained unchanged: clarity, elegance, and perfect geometry.
This Ref. 96019 from the 1970s represents Cartier’s extra-plat models, utilizing movements such as the Frederic Piguet Cal. 21 to create refined dress pieces that sat almost invisibly on the wrist.
