Rolex - 1979 Rolex 18039 18k White Gold S. American Bracelet Day-Date

The 18039 was the successor to the 1803. This 1979 white gold variant was one of the earliest 18039's and came on a S. American bracelet with full clasp. The watch fits a 7.5" wrist and what is unique to this transitionary model was the bracelet was manufactured in S. America. During years of high tariffs, Rolex moved precious metal bracelet production to the designated countries where there watch would be ultimately delivered. This got around the high taxes the Swiss brand would have had to pay for importing quantities of precious metals. As a result this bracelet requires cutting links off to remove and size the watch to the individuals wrist. These links can be reattached through watchmakers later on as long as they are removed professionally.
The 1970's 18039 here today is a wonderful example of an iconic watch, whose polish remains even and whose lugs are thick. The original white gold color has developed a wonderful almost-champagne finish. The metal of the hands and hour markers remains untarnished, and its dial unscathed.
