Jaeger-LeCoultre - 50’s LeCoultre Driver’s Watch
I first noticed it due to the fact I could see the dial easily while it was laid out “flat” next to other watches in the showcase.
This is a key element to the design, as stated earlier it is referred to as a “driver’s” watch. 🏎️🏎️
The case is designed to sit on the side of the wrist to allow legibility without the need to remove your hand from the steering wheel.
With this angular case design measurements are a bit tricky, but the main measurement most people seem to care about is the width, and being a ~50’s (possibly ladies size) piece this one comes in at a humble 20mm.
As you can see from the side profile, the 12’ “lugs” are positioned at a roughly -45 degree angle, allowing the piece to sit comfortably on the side of the wrist.
On this portion there is also wonderful cut-out stirrup motif, seen best from the top. I would go well with a pair of loafers with the same motif like those from Ferragamo or Gucci. 🐎
This piece is part of the lineage of LeCoultre made for the US market. This is best determined by the 14k gold case, Vacheron import code on the balance bridge, and the glaring “Cased and Timed in U.S.A. by LeCoultre” markings inside the case back.
Inside runs a LeCoultre 490 B/W manual wound movement, the service history is unknown but it is running and keeping time.
The dial is a stunning horizontally brushed gold tone with applied cylindrical markers (reminiscent of French made pieces such as Boucheron) at 3, 6 and 9, with an applied pyramid marker at 12 and applied “pearl/ball” markers for the rest.
(Easily visible in hand but tough to see in photos, a close up shot shown in the final slide)
The cherry on top for me is the elegant case back engraving “MS” 🍰
