TAG Heuer - 80’s Heuer Quartz “Monnin Case” Diver

There is some debate in the Heuer collecting community about the origins of the “Monnin Case” and from what we’ve been able to determine, this case was made by MRP S.A. as were most of the “Monnin” pieces, but only a select few of the early variants were assembled/marked by the French manufacturer.

The above example features the Heuer logo at 12, 200 Metres (not meters) and professional above the 6’ marker, and a T-SWISS MADE-T below 6. Together with the quartz movement and 980.007 signature on the outside of the case back it would indicate it was produced in the later run of the “Monnin Case” divers, but before the rebranding from Heuer to TAG Heuer.

The case, clearly marked MRP S.A. (Marchand, Roth et Petignat S.A.), is in the same design and dimensions as the aforementioned “Monnin” pieces.

This particular piece, measuring 45mm (with crown), features gorgeous thick lugs with over pronounced chamfers. The unidirectional bezel still possesses its luminous “pip” at the 0 position, and a wonderfully luminescent Tritium dial and handset. Inside runs a Heuer signed ESA (one of our favs) 536.121 quartz movement.

The dial is in wonderful conditions, and the case and crystal have some scratches/wear but we feel it adds to the charm of the piece.

Fitted on a vintage Flex-On brand “tropic” style strap, it goes perfectly with the 80’s oversized diver look.
