Bueche Girod - Barthelay Rare 1960 Tank | Duck Beak Lugs | 18k Gold | Limited
A jeweller by trade but an artist at heart, Alexis Barthelay had an eye for gemstones and the wristwatch became his canvas. This was not about utility; this was about alchemy. Watches, in his hands, became wearable poetry and by the 1960s, the House of Barthelay had become a name whispered in the salons and soirées of Europe’s elite.
It was during this time of reinvention that one of Barthelay’s most exquisite creations took form. Crafted in 18k yellow gold, the tank-style case featured unique “bec de canard” (duck beak) lugs that gave it a sophisticated silhouette. Sword hands, sharp and precise, glided across the dial and stamped on the back were the hallmarks of France, a quiet assurance that this watch was born of a legacy steeped in artistry and heritage.
To truly understand its significance, one must delve deeper into the philosophy of its founder. Barthelay was not content in following trends so he sought to rewrite them. In the 1980s, when the watchmaking world was upended by the arrival of quartz, many traditional maisons failed but Barthelay adapted and thrived, until it was bought by the Frank Muller Group in 2005.
It is impossible to discuss Barthelay without acknowledging his ties to Cartier, with whom he shared an undeniable association. Often working together to release co-branded models, both houses understood that real luxury was not about timekeeping but storytelling. Yet, where Cartier leaned into its heritage, Barthelay broke away from tradition, infusing its creations with a flair that was bold and uniquely its own.
