Blancpain - Fifty Fathoms “BUND”
For sale is a rare and remarkable piece of dive watch history: the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms “BUND”, crafted specifically for German Bundeswehr frogmen in the 1970s. Unlike standard Fifty Fathoms models, these watches were strictly issued for military use and were never available for public sale. What sets this model apart is its unique bezel design. The Bundeswehr divers used rebreathers, eliminating the need for the traditional graduated dive bezel seen on watches like the Rolex Submariner. Instead, this bezel is minimalist, featuring a plain insert without numerals or minute markers.
The case is in excellent condition, showing some signs of military use but still preserving its original factory chamfers and finish. The bezel, while showing wear from use, is intact and complete, including the typical crack in the Tritium triangle at the 12 o'clock position. The case back, which displays the engraved serial number and "BUND," is also in original condition with minor wear consistent with the rest of the case. The fixed spring bars remain securely attached. The watch comes on a NATO strap. The mineral glass shows no marks or scratches.
The glossy dial is immaculate, with no cracks or blemishes, and looks stunning. Under UV light, the tritium in the dial, bezel, and hands briefly glows, indicating its original material and the lume shows little to no degradation.
