Brief summary:
The name “Gerald Genta” should be no stranger to most today in the collecting circle/watch industry. Known as the “Picasso of watches” and one of the most important watch designers in history, responsible for making unparalleled contributions to fine watchmaking, designing several legendary timepieces, most notably the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet, the Nautilus for Patek Philippe, the Ingenieur for IWC, the Pasha for Cartier and many more!
All of these great watches and more bear the names of other brands, and while many consider those models by Genta among the most important creations in the history of watch design, they were not 100% Genta.
For that he struck out on his own even before the tide was turning away from the quartz crisis, building a brand bearing his name where he experimented with designs, textures, materials, and complications. He created his eponymous brand in 1969, creating many incredible icons and unique designs under his very own name.
With all his unique and iconic designs, comes a more classic and unusual model that one would think might be too “tame” for a Genta, but at a glance, unmistakably a Gerald Genta timepiece.
Not just an ordinary round case design though, featuring a step case and Genta’s iconic “singular” lug design,
One of the first official recording and production iconic and round case design was the reference G.2132.7 Ultra-Thin Perpetual Calendar and would later serve as the very foundation for this other classic round case reference which included a variety of different cases sized perpetual calendars, a time-only model, reference G.3132.7 such as the example we have offered here, minute repeater models and many more.
This example features a gorgeous and rarely seen dark blue dial with white Roman numerals as well as minute tracks, paired up with stainless steel hour, minute and central seconds hands.
A circle located above the 6 o’clock numerals reveals a date complication.
The watch is encased in stainless-steel, sized elegantly at 36mm.
Behind the solid caseback reveals a Gerald Genta signed Frederic Piguet 9.51 automatic movement.
Gerald Genta’s true/early timepieces are not just collectible watches, but dare we say, important and unique pieces of historical art on the wrist. His watches truly were like no other and exude such quality that simply cannot be ignored.
This example we have offered is not only the perfect addition for someone looking to add a timepiece by one of the most important figures in watchmaking at budget, but also a great addition for those looking for a more “tame” and classic Genta!
