Brief summary:
The name “Gerald Genta” should be no stranger to most today in the collecting circle/watch industry. Known as the “Picasso of watches” and one of the most important watch designers in history, responsible for making unparalleled contributions to fine watchmaking, designing several legendary timepieces, most notably the Royal Oak for Audemars Piguet, the Nautilus for Patek Philippe, the Ingenieur for IWC, the Pasha for Cartier and many more!
All of these great watches and more bear the names of other brands, and while many consider those models by Genta among the most important creations in the history of watch design, they were not 100% Genta.
For that he struck out on his own even before the tide was turning away from the quartz crisis, building a brand bearing his name where he experimented with designs, textures, materials, and complications. He created his eponymous brand in 1969, creating many incredible icons and unique designs under his very own name.
Among his bold designs under his own name and daring ideas, it was in the late 1990s Genta presented the first retrograde watch combining jumping hours and retrograde minutes.
This complex and demanding mechanism reflects the particular DNA of Gerald Genta, which perfectly marries innovative designs and complications requiring exceptional craftsmanship. It was not only complicated, but surprisingly affordable which open a gateway for young watch enthusiasts to discover his story and pieces.
Gérald Genta developed a new way of reading time by associating two complications (jumping hour and retrograde minutes) in the same movement and on the same dial.
This was a first in the history of watchmaking. This inventive model with the original dial is later to be enriched with many different versions, however the most classic and sought-after was his “Retro Classic” and of course his many “Retro-Disney” pieces.
Unlike the more common (in this case) stainless-steel example the G.3634 Retro Classic are usually found, this example here features a highly rare white-gold case! Of course paired featuring a gorgeous mother-of-pearl dial, an incredibly desirable combination!
The case feature a coin edge, closed caseback design and his notable Genta design crown. It is also sized elegantly at 36mm for Men. [Not to be mistaken and confused with its smaller 34mm automatic and 28mm quartz counterparts]
The watch is powered by the “ Gerald Genta Caliber 4503”, which is a well-finished base ETA 2892-A2 with a unique patented module for retrograde minutes and jump hour.
Gerald Genta’s true/early timepieces are not just collectible watches, but dare we say, important and unique pieces of historical art on the wrist. His watches truly were like no other and exude such quality that simply cannot be ignored.
The Retro Classic especially has become an important part of the collection later on in the history of Gérald Genta and personified the elegance and complexity that have become the pride of the brand. Offering tremendous value to collectors today, this rare white-gold mother-of-pearl dial combination makes for an incredible addition to any collector wishing to own a significant piece of Maestro Genta’s history without needing to break the bank!
