IWC Schaffhausen - IWC mark XI
Originally established in 1868, IWC is a Swiss company founded by an American who is now recognized as one of the great names in the industry. Among the flagship models of the house we can mention the Portugieser, the Portofino, Aquatimer, Pilot’s watch and especially our model, the Ingenieur.
The IWC Mark 11 is one of the most iconic pilot’s watches in horological history. It was specifically designed for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and other Commonwealth air forces. The story of the IWC Mark 11 begins in the post-World War II era.
The IWC Mark 11 was fitted with the Caliber 89 movement, one of IWC's most famous manual-winding movements, known for its precision and reliability. The Caliber 89 was adjusted to chronometer standards to ensure high accuracy.
The watch had a 36mm stainless steel case, simple and utilitarian, designed to be durable and legible in any condition. The dial was black with large Arabic numerals and a minute track, along with luminous hands and indices for visibility in low light.
A defining feature was the soft iron inner cage around the movement, providing protection against magnetic fields, which was essential for military pilots exposed to magnetic interference from aircraft instruments.
This model comes with a caseback probably replaced during a service in the RAF's workshops. Indeed it bears very rare markings normally used for camera watches. A cool piece, available at a friendly cost.
