Jaeger-LeCoultre - Jaeger LeCoultre Gondole | Rare | 18k Gold | Blue Rail Dial | Ref 9100
In the 1970s, as the world was captivated by the allure of the moving image, watchmakers had sought to capture that same sense of dynamism in timepieces that mirrored the form of the television screen. It was a bold and unconventional move, one that spoke to the zeitgeist of a generation that had grown up in the shadow of the cathode ray.
The 1970s were also the golden age of rail travel and the rail dial was an essential feature for pocket watches carried by conductors and engineers. The bold, contrasting markings allowed for easy and accurate time reading, even in the dimly lit confines of a locomotive cab.
And in the hands of Jaeger-LeCoultre, these unorthodox design elements became a thing of breathtaking beauty – a fusion of form and function that had elevated this humble wristwatch to the realm of art.
The “watchmaker’s watchmaker” has had an extensive history in movement manufacturing and has supplied its coveted calibers to most of the other prestigious brands including Audemars Piguet, Cartier and Patek Philippe.
Sized at a generous 35mm and similar in design and dimension to the famed Louis Cartier model, this is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s “Gondole” and capable of holding its own. Powered by the legendary ultra thin, manual wind cal 818, this super rare Reference 9100 with its deep blue rail dial is in unpolished, mint condition and impossible to find.
