Other - Mappin Art deco
At The Arrow of Time, we hold a deep appreciation for Art Deco design, and this timepiece embodies that passion. Its rectangular case and harmonious combination of steel and 18k rose gold (0/750°°) perfectly capture the bold yet refined aesthetic of the era.
This watch is the result of a fascinating collaboration between Mappin & Webb and Vertex. Mappin & Webb, established in 1775, is a renowned British jeweler and watchmaker celebrated for its luxurious creations. Vertex, founded in 1916, gained recognition for its high-quality watches, including those made for the British military. In the early 20th century, collaborations like this were common, with retailers like Mappin & Webb branding dials while manufacturers such as Vertex supplied the watches.
The cream-colored dial features painted Roman numerals, with a distinctive red "12," a railway minute track, and blued steel Breguet hands. The mechanical movement, expertly tailored to the case’s shape, reflects the craftsmanship of its time. With dimensions of 25 x 31 mm (37 mm including the lugs) and a weight of 27.4 g, it combines timeless elegance with everyday comfort.
Adding to its charm, the case back bears a historical engraving:
"Presented by the Gas Light & Coke Company to Mr. J.J. Keily in recognition of 43 1/4 years valued service, November 1940."
More than a timepiece, this watch is a symbol of Art Deco artistry, meticulous craftsmanship, and rich history, making it a true treasure for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
