Patek Philippe - Patek Philippe 3940J Perpetual Calendar "2nd Series" - *Unpolished*
The release of the ref. 3940 in 1985 was a bold move by Patek Philippe. At the time, the quartz crisis was still in full swing and the global economy was not in a healthy state. In a departure from tradition, Patek released the 3940 and sister 3970 in serial production, in contrast to the very tight production numbers of the 2499 and other previous perpetual calendars. The 3940 would go on to be a model that defines the brand as collectors think of it today. At just 3.75mm the caliber 240Q with micro-rotor is considered a masterpiece of horology, aiding in it to be one of the most ergonomic and truly elegant pieces we can think of on wrist.
This particular example, circa ’94 is cased in yellow gold comes with archive papers adding to its provenance. Also included is its correct 18k Patek deployant buckle and strap. Collectors affectionately refer to this as a “late 2nd series” due to its crosshair in the right sub-register and sigma signature sitting below the minute track. It is estimated that fewer than 3500 “2nd series” were produced in all metal variations. The case has remained in fantastic and honest vintage condition with strong hallmarks and no signs of polishing. The dial is also in excellent shape with only some light service marks but nothing distracting. We could not be more thrilled to offer this stunning and collector grade example in the shop. With a recent service, this piece is ready to enjoy for years to come.
Dial: There are some small service marks in the left and right sub-registers as well as near the post of the moonphase but none are distracting to the naked eye. Overall, excellent preservation for its age.
