Patek Philippe - Patek Philippe Caltrava 5196G - Archive Papers - *Unpolished*
The Patek Philippe Calatrava stands as a testament to one of the most esteemed watch designs from the 20th century, with its origins dating back to the 1930s, commencing with the iconic ref. 96. The updated reference 3796 was introduced in 1982 and ran up through 1999. Minimal updates included a sapphire crystal and new caliber 215. It is often referred to as the last "classic" Calatrava for its identical case shape to the original ref. 96. Although both references share a 30.5mm case width, these pieces wear larger than one might expect, due to their long lug architecture. Collectors with large wrists will find the original Calatrava size a touch too small and for anyone in that camp, the ref. 5196 could be just the ticket. Introduced in 2004 this updated model comes in at 37mm and runs on the same cal. 215.
This particular piece, circa 2010 is a true collector grade example and comes with an archive extract adding to its provenance. The dial is mint and the hands are devoid of service marks. The case is very clean and appears unpolished with sharp edges and deep hallmarks. Also included is its Patek Philippe strap and 18k pink buckle. It doesn't get more classic than this for Patek design language and in white gold this piece is perfectly understated as a Calatrava should be.
