Patek Philippe - *RARE* 1920s Patek Philippe “Tank Style” | Ref. 439 | Wenger Case

Born from a time when style was defined by restraint, this elusive Tank-style watch, reference 439, embodies quiet sophistication. With just a handful documented examples, it stands as a true collector’s gem. As your journey into horology deepens, it's these understated treasures that begin to resonate, pieces where proportion, detail, and presence come together in perfect harmony.

Crafted in solid 18kt gold, this remarkable piece retains all its original hallmarks and features, matching serial numbers across all three case components: the case-back, Top, and movement holder. Based on documented examples, the movement dates to the late 1920s, during the pre-Stern family era of Patek Philippe. In the wake of the 1929 economic crash, demand for luxury timepieces diminished significantly, and it wasn’t until the late 1930s that this movement was finally encased, allowing it to emerge with all the quiet grace.

Marked with the Key Number 1 hallmark, this case was crafted by Wenger, one of Patek Philippe’s most trusted case makers, known for housing icons like the ref. 2499. Founded in 1912 by André and Edouard Wenger and registered in 1920, the firm gained international acclaim after winning a prize at the 1925 Paris Exhibition. Throughout the Art Deco era, Wenger became a reference in Geneva for exquisite pocket and wristwatch cases, supplying the most prestigious watchmakers.

CONDITION

The two-tone dial features a complete set of applied rectangular and circular hour markers, all beautifully preserved. The long signature remains sharp and legible. While the dial shows signs of age, including visible patina, fine hairlines, and surface marks, these characteristics speak to its authenticity and vintage charm.

The case remains strong and sharply defined, showing no clear signs of polishing. The original crown is exceptionally well preserved, and the movement, freshly serviced, is running beautifully, ready for decades more of faithful timekeeping.
