Cartier - Rare 1980s Tortue | Full Set | 18k Gold | Excellent Condition

Cartier first introduced the Tank in 1917, inspired by the Renault FT-17 tanks and the Tank Louis Cartier or Tank LC in 1924, which is the benchmark for all tank models. Nearly 5 decades later in 1973, 12 shaped models were launched within the new Louis Cartier Collection, including the tortoise shaped “Tortue” featured here.

Where did Louis Cartier's fascination with the tortoise begin? Perhaps it was in the philosophy of Art Nouveau with its organic forms and asymmetry. Maybe it was in the study of ancient cultures where the tortoise often symbolized wisdom and protection. Or was it simply the mind of a genius designer, unbound by convention, who found in the tortoise, a precision and a permanence that aligned with the world of watchmaking.

Today, the Tortue remains a masterpiece of Cartier's repertoire, a testament to the maison's obsession with shapes. Its curves are as relevant now as they were in 1912, a reminder that true innovation is timeless.

Arguably the best example of this signature reference in impeccable condition fitted with a “Paris” signed dial, the “secret” Cartier signature and multiple Cartier straps presented as a rare full set. Only at the Cartierist.
