Boucheron - Rare Limited “B” Carree | 18k Yellow Gold | Reflet Clasp
The watch arrived in a vintage silk pouch; an 18k yellow gold Boucheron Carrée, from the late 1960s, its square geometry both restrained and audacious, the way only Parisian design of the era could be.
Boucheron had never been the loudest name in the room. Their first pocket watches appeared in 1859, and by 1885 they had embraced the wristwatch, decades before many of their contemporaries accepted the form. But while Cartier and Piaget chased recognition, Boucheron worked in silence.
As has been noted in Hodinkee’s brilliantly written piece “The Golden Age of Boucheron Wristwatches”, the maison wasn’t just producing timepieces; it was redefining how a watch should sit on the wrist. Patents littered casebacks like hidden signatures: BT 908247, BT 1203255, BT 7023160; each a reminder of how a watch could attach itself to the wearer.
This Carrée was one of these creations. The dial, unsigned, bore only a hand-painted “B,” an experiment from a transitional period in the 1960s. The painted insignia was not a flourish for vanity; it was a nod to lineage, echoing the earliest Reflet models of the 1930s and ’40s, when the maison’s artisans had still brushed dials by hand.
Collectors have begun circling back to Boucheron in recent years, riding a wave of renewed interest.
Another Carrée, almost identical but rarer in white gold which makes up less than 3% of Boucheron’s production, will also surface soon. And even rarer still, the Reflet version of this elusive limited edition rests in our private collection.
