Gerald Genta was a legendary Swiss watch designer, widely considered one of the most influential figures in the history of modern watchmaking. Born in 1931 in Geneva, Genta revolutionized the industry with his bold, ahead-of-their-time designs.
He’s best known for creating some of the most iconic luxury sports watches ever made:
- **Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (1972):** Designed in just one night, this watch broke conventions with its angular, octagonal bezel, exposed screws, and integrated bracelet. It was the first high-end steel sports watch, and it saved AP from financial ruin.
- **Patek Philippe Nautilus (1976):** Following the success of the Royal Oak, Genta designed the Nautilus with a ship’s porthole in mind. Like the Royal Oak, it was also a luxury sports watch in stainless steel, but with a softer, more rounded design.
- **IWC Ingenieur SL**, **Omega Constellation**, and several models for **Universal Genève** were also among his many creations.
Later in his career, Genta launched his own brand, producing highly complicated and whimsical timepieces—like retrograde watches and pieces themed around Disney characters, which were surprisingly popular among collectors.
He passed away in 2011, but his influence is still massive in the industry. His designs are now cult classics, often fetching enormous prices on the vintage and secondary markets.
