Rolex - Rolex Datejust 18K Red Jasper Ref. 1601, 1976

Red Jasper

Apart from using with color dials such as the rare and sought after Stella dials, Rolex has also, throughout its history, experimented with exotic materials for its dials. Stella and wood dials are only two of the very popular dial materials but one unique and very important material that Rolex has used is stone.

Over the years, Rolex has produced dials with different stone types e.g. Lapis, Onyx, Malachite, Jasper, Coral etc. of which only a few came on 4 digit Datejusts references. We hope we didn't forget any but the list goes Lapis, Onyx, Malachite, Tiger Eye, Red Jasper and Chalcedony. We predominantly see stone dials on Day Dates today but it is important to know that the first Rolex watches with stone dials were actually Datejusts, starting in the early 70s. The earliest Day Dates with stone dials appeared in ca 1977.

Collectors value these early stone dials on Datejusts a lot and when we ask collectors why they prefer stone dial Datejusts over Day Dates, the answer is often that the lack of the Day window allows to appreciate more of the stone itself. You will realize when you hold both models next to each other. Another reason is that the domed plexi glass gives the watch a completely different character.

Now enough on the history and background of these watches, lets look at the watch on offer. We have here a beautiful example of a Rolex Datejust 1601 in 18K yellow gold. The watch dates back to 1976 and bears an absolute rare and breathtaking dial, the Red Jasper. The color of the dial is unreal, a deep almost burgundy red, yet lightly translucent with very light 'orangy' inclusions giving the dial a beautiful natural pattern. The print is prominent and crisp, does not show any fading or faint areas. The handset is correct and matching. The condition is truly insane, the dial does not show any hairlines, scratches, cracks or any damage whatsoever.

These Red Jasper Datejusts are extremely sought after and occasionally also appear at auctions and when in unharmed condition, fetch record prices.

It is not exaggerated if we say that this Datejust is worthy to have a seat among the Grails of all stone dial Datejusts, every dial is unique, the more beautiful, the more sought after and the more attractive, the higher the value.

This watch on the wrist is like a fireball, a true joy to read the time, actually it doesn't even matter if its on time.
