Rolex - Rolex Datejust Oysterquartz 1st Generation Ref. 17000, 1978
Quartz
With a total production run of about 25 years ranging from 1977 till about 2002 it is one which holds significant historical importance. It was Rolex's answer to the Quartz Crisis in the 1970s when most watch brands were adding Quartz watches to their collections. It is rumored that the finishing on the Oysterquartz movements was done at even higher standard than their automatic movements. The total production seems to have not surpassed the 25000 mark which is a very small number when it comes to Rolex watches.
Here is a first Generation example from 1978 which notably features the single line text at 6 o clock only, holding significant rarity. The overall condition of the watch is strong with a nicely beveled case and sharp edges, clear numbers and the condition we want to see an Oysterquartz in. For a watch with almost 45 years of age it is a stunner and always a conversation piece. Pictures don't do justice.
