Rolex - Rolex Datejust Purple Buckley Dial Ref. 16014, 1983
Purple Buckley
Buckley is definitively not a name that ever appeared in a Rolex catalogue. The Rolex Buckley dial is a beloved and somewhat niche variant of vintage Rolex Day Date and Datejust dials that features printed Roman numerals instead of applied indices. It is named after John Buckley, a well-known vintage Rolex dealer and collector from New York who helped popularize the dial among enthusiasts and gave it its now widely accepted nickname.
The key characteristics of the Buckley dial are the large Roman numerals that are painted directly on the dial. Buckley dials come in a range of colors like black, grey, brown, white and some others. Very popular also because the Buckley is one of the few watches that came with black or white hands to match the numerals.
We have here a stunning example of a Rolex Datejust 16014 with a sought after blue Buckley dial that has, over the course of the last 42 years, aged to a vivid purple color. The color of the dial is sort of magical, showing off its hues in different lightings. A very impressive color that is not very often seen and that looks absolute mesmerizing on the wrist.
The overall condition of the watch is great. The case is sharp and well defined, the white gold fluted bezel is also very well retained and playful in sunlight. The bracelet is crisp and doesn’t show much wear from age. The 16014 is the last plexi glass reference that features the quickset date function, something that comes very handy.
A great opportunity to acquire a rare and sought after version of the Datejust which is one of the most iconic Rolex watches ever made.
