Rolex - Rolex Explorer 5506 w/ "Honeycomb" Dial - Extremely Rare
The Rolex Explorer is a line of watches that was first introduced in 1953. The Explorer is notable for its association with exploration and adventure, with a design that emphasizes durability, reliability, and legibility in extreme conditions. It features a beautifully simple, balanced, no-nonsense design, with a clear and easy-to-read dial, luminous hour markers, and a robust stainless steel case. The watch is also equipped with Rolex's patented Oyster case, which provides exceptional water resistance and protection from dust and other environmental hazards.
The watch was famously worn by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay during their ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, solidifying its reputation as a watch for adventurers and explorers. Since then, the Explorer has been worn on numerous expeditions and adventures, both on and off the beaten path. The Explorer has become a symbol of Rolex's commitment to quality and reliability in extreme conditions, and has earned a top spot in the list of Rolex's iconic models.
This particular ref. 5506 is an extremely rare Explorer with galvanized steel/gold case, making a unique combination of adventure and dress watch for Rolex. It features a "honeycomb" and "step" dial with the now iconic "3, 6, 9" numerals we now think of on the 1016 and later refs. The dial has remained in phenomenal condition with light wear and the case has seen some honest wear but presents with great character on wrist. If you've been looking for something truly special and seldom seen this piece has it all in spades.
Dial: There is some light spotting but nothing distracting to the naked eye. All of the radium plots have take on a stunning and even patina. Overall, fantastic preservation for a "honeycomb" / "step" dial of this era.
Bezel: Sharp with wear that's consistent with the case.
Hands: Are matching and their lume is stable. Case: The extremely rare galvanized or "hood" case has very thick gold plating. some of this has worn over time, most notably on the upper left lug from normal wear. It is not distracting however and all of the wear adds to its overall charm. Correct signed crown.
Bracelet: Two piece leather strap in brown. Crystal: Has some light scratches. They can be polished at the next owner's request but we decided to leave the character there for now. Accessories: The perfect adventure companion with access to quick strap changes.
