Rolex - Rolex Submariner 5513 - "Meters First Gilt" Dial - *Unpolished*
The Rolex Submariner was first introduced by Rolex in 1953 and is notable for being one of the first watches specifically designed for diving. Beyond its technical capabilities, the Submariner has become an icon in the world of watches, with a timeless design that has remained largely unchanged since its introduction. It is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential watches of all time, and has become a symbol of Rolex's reputation for quality, durability, and precision. The Sub has been worn by everyone from professional divers and military personnel to Hollywood celebrities and heads of state, cementing its place in the pantheon of iconic watches.
This particular ref. 5513 is a 124X serial, circa early 1966 pre-dates the final gilt "Bart" dial just before matte dial production. Gilt dials are highly coveted by collectors for their warmth and overall beauty. Rolex eventually found them too difficult to produce and evolved to matte production from later 60's to the early 80's. What makes them so special is a process of galvanization of brass for their lettering which has a warm and golden tone across the dial/hands, as well as their glossy coating which is mirror-like. Finding well-preserved pieces today has become harder as each year passes. This example boasts beautiful vintage condition with a strong dial that has stunning patina and no distracting blemishes. The "long 5" insert has "ghosted" to a beautiful grey/blue tone. To top it off, the case and bracelet are both unpolished. This is a true collector grade piece that we couldn't be more thrilled to offer in the shop!
Dial: Excellent with a mirror-like gloss throughout. The outer edges show some light wear in direct light conditions which is normal for these gilt dials over time- (refer to video content). Overall, highly attractive with minimal wear. All of the zinc sulfinde/tritium lume has aged evenly to a stunning and warm golden tone, matching the hands and insert. Bezel insert: Is beautifully preserved and has "ghosted" to an attractive grey/blue tone. Pip is still present.
Hands: Are all matching and their lume is stable with no cracking.
Case: Fantastic and appears unpolished with sharp chamfers. Normal signs of use consistent with age. Correct signed crown.
Bracelet: Is a beautiful and correct rivet variant with 12 links. Appears unpolished with light stretch. Will fit an approximate 7.5 inch wrist.
Crystal: Has some light crazing near the edges but it is not distracting.
