Chopard - St. Moritz Chrono | 1st Generation | Stainless Steel | Black Dial | 8336

Unlike its more ostentatious rival, the Daytona, this watch carries a quiet confidence. Its heart beats with the famed Frederic Piguet 1185, the Rolls-Royce of watch movements with a column-wheel chronograph and vertical clutch: smooth, precise, and elegant.

In the late 1970s, as the quartz crisis loomed and Swiss watchmaking wobbled on the brink of extinction, Chopard made an audacious move. At a time when steel sports watches were dominated by the likes of Gérald Genta’s Royal Oak and Nautilus, Scheufele wanted to chart a different course.

The result was the St. Moritz, Chopard’s first-ever steel sports watch. Its design was an uneven octagon; adorned with eight screws that weren’t just for show. These screws served a purpose, securing a gasket beneath the bezel to achieve 30 meters of water resistance.

Every detail of this watch feels like a love letter to horological excellence. The black-dial variant with the old style Chopard block logo, produced in the lowest numbers, is the crown jewel of the reference. The uneven octagon case is pure rebellion, a shape that refuses to conform to the symmetry of its peers. It’s not trying to be the Royal Oak or the Nautilus; this one stands on its own.
