Launched in 2003, the UR-103 boasted a design that was unprecedented for its time, and laid the foundations for all the other models that followed. The unconventional time-reading feature was the redesigned ‘vagabond hour’ complication, with 4 rotating satellites indicating the hour and pointing to the minutes along a 120° scale. The UR-103 was also the first Urwerk watch to be made in pink gold.
Initially closed with only the front open, the UR-103.09 features a larger sapphire crystal opening inspired by the Porsche Targa concept. This open bonnet reveals the four satellites in orbit, giving a completely ‘spaceship’ look with vertical striations.
On the back, there is a ‘dashboard’, a device directly inspired by the old marine chronometers (certain indications were not used daily, so they were placed on the back). This panel indicates a small seconds, a 15-minute counter hand and a power reserve.
