Vacheron Constantin - Vacheron Constantin Toledo

The Vacheron Constantin Toledo, first released in the early 1952 , had a truly unique case shape that provided diversity to the classic watch shapes that Vacheron Constantin typically made. The case is described as being a ‘curved square’ and the Toledo later became known by collectors as Cioccolatone (or chocolate square) by Italian collectors.  The Cioccolatone case is distinguished by the step up from the body of the case at the lugs to the still higher square bezel. The slight inward curvature along the flanks gives the watch a very refined and sensual feel.

While there have been many re-editions and models of the toledo since its inception, this particular example of the ref 31100 stands out, as a special “Liberte” edition issued by Vacheron Constantin in 1991 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the founding of Swizerland (or more precisely the Conferatio Helvetica). Amongst the liberty signed 31100s that were released, fewer were made in platinum, making this piece even more desirable by collectors.

This special Toledo is powered manual winding Caliber 1132.2, based on the Frederic Piguet 8.10 ebauche. This tiny movement sits on the fence between ultra and extra-flat at 2.0 mm, allowing it to fit in the extra flat platinum case measuring 33mm by 27mm.
